Pigeonpea is an important edible bean crop, which is widely planted in the world. Most of planted varieties are improved pigeonpea ones. It is the first time that the improved pigeonpea was planted in Jiangxi Province. The paper summarized the introduction and the experiment of the improved-india pigeonpea (Cajannus cajan) in jiangxi province. Researches on feasibility of planting in Jiangxi, cultivation technique, and the technique of diseases and pests control have been conducted. The role of pigeonpea in water conversation, soil amelioration, qualify in itself, and the pigeonpea as edibles, fodder and firewood have been preliminarily studied. The major results are as follows:1.the improved India pigeonpea can finish one complete generation period in the region of jiangxi province. The plant can overwinter naturally in South Jiangxi but can not in North Jiangxi in normal years, the plant can overwinter naturally in warm winter in Middle Jiangxi. The plant without pruning can better overwinter than the plant with pruning;2.the improved India pigeonpea varieties ICPL93081,ICPL93079,ICPL93015 and ICPH8 are fit to plant in Jiangxi because of their high seeds yield, high stem and leaves yield, moderate mature period, good comprehensive characters as well as the plant as both vegetable and food.3.the improved India pigeonpea can grow in the various types of soils in Jiangxi owing to their resistance to drought, tolerance to sterility and rapid growth. The seeds yield can reach higher than 2000kg/hm2.4.sowing started when the average day temperature is stably above 15 C and the direct sowing should be applied; the planting density is 6000 ~ 8000 plants / hm2 with the wide row and narrow plant space; the applied rates of N, P2O5 and K2O are 45kg/ hm2, 45kg/ hm2 and 60kg/ hm2 , respectively, in combination with spraying micro-elements such as B and Mo fertilizers; the planting density of pigeonpea asfood or fertilizer should be 10000-12000 plants / hm2, the rates of N, P2O5 and K2O are 120kg/' hm2, 60kg/ hm2and 120kg/ hm2, respectively. The plant should be mowed annually twice, and the mowed plant height is 100 cm. The first batch mowing should be done at early pod period and the second at the middle or last ten days of November.5.preliminary investigation revealed that the major pest insects injured pigeonpea in Jiangxi have 47 species (7 orders, 23 families), of which, the seriously pests are Maruca testulais, Helithis armigera, and Etiella zinckenella et al, and the major diseases have 5 kinds, the more serious diseases are Sclerotium rolfsii, and Rhizoctonia solan i.6.the improved pigeonpea varieties have the effects of water conversation and soil amelioration. The coverage within the planting year can reach 70-150%. The pigeonpea field with 90% coverage did not bring about runoff and scouring, compared with the field without pigeonpea planting resulting in 0.75mVl00m2 runoff and 0.16kg/100m2 in scouring. N,P,K and organic matters in soil increased, especially available N and available K increased significantly because of great amount of fallen leaves and the fix-nitrogen effect of the plant in itself.7.the seeds are rich in nutrient, which can be used as fresh vegetable or cooking or frying after drying. Also the seeds can be processed into the other foods. The stem and leaves are good fodder and fertilizer, and the dried stem is also good firewood.
