Vegetable growing in greenhouse is an important part of protected horticulture, Tomato is one of the vegetable which are widely grown in greenhouse because there is a great demand for tomato.At present, compared with developed countries, the culture degree of greenhouse managers and producers in china is lower and their abilities to acquire knowledge are lower too, result in lower level of greenhouse management. So it is greatly important to develop an expert system for plant of greenhouse tomato, which can help greenhouse managers to plant tomato reasonably in greenhouse, and the expert system should be widely applied in the future. This paper that is an important part of "Research and Development on Practical Intelligent Greenhouse for Protected Horticulture"(one key project of Zhejiang province), includes a series of research work which concerns expert system based on growth model for plant of greenhouse tomato.In this paper, we first integrates the foreign study on greenhouse tomato growth simulation model, then thoroughly describes two typical greenhouse tomato growthmodels--TOMGRO model and TOMSIM model. Based on the analysis andcomparison of the two typical models, we point out their advantages and disadvantages, and then choose TOMGRO model to simulate the growth and development of tomato in greenhouse.With the aid of the foreign references, we have simplified TOMGRO model to make it to be applied easily. According to the experimental data coming from foreign references, we have built some important functions of simplified TOMGRO model in order to make it can be implemented by computer.In this paper, we have collected the special knowledge about tomato cultivation and chosen different knowledge expression method to represent the knowledge of different characteristic, then stored above knowledge into knowledge base.In this paper, we have designed expert system based on growth model for plant of greenhouse tomato, which has the advantages of crop growth simulation model and expert system by combining the decision-making function of expert system with the forecast function of crop growth simulation model.In this paper, we have developed expert system based on growth model for plant of greenhouse tomato by integrating database technology, multimedia technology, expert system technology and dynamic web technology, with the result that the expert system can run on the Internet/Intranet and can be shared by more people and can gain more social benefit and economic benefit in the future.At the end of this paper, a summary on foregoing work is discussed. Also, we put forward a synoptic on future work.
