Peony cultivars were used to study the effects of plant growth regulators and pruning methods on flower bud differentiation and development, dormancy, bud sprouting, growth and flowering of peony. The mechanism of regulation of the florescence of peony treated with chemicals and pruning were also discussed. All above provided theoretical and practical bases for further regulation of the florescence of peony in the field. The results of studies showed that fall ethephon applications retarded flower bud differentiation and development, increased flower bud chilling requirements and delayed bud sprouting and flowering of peony by about 3 days; however, ethephon treatments decreased flowering rates and quality of peony. GAs applied in the fall delayed leaf abscission, promoted bud sprouting and flowering, and increased flowering rates and flower diameter of peony. Fall application of 89 delayed flowering of peony by 2 ?5 days; Early spring application of 89 had obvious effect on promoting flowering and prolonging flowering time. The effect of 89 applied in young buds developing was better than the other treatments, prolonging flowering time by about 9 days; However, 89 treatments had significant effects on retarding the new shoot growth of peony. Spring application of 6-BA increased the flower diameter of peony, and 6-BA at 200mg/L applied delayed flowering of peony significantly. However, combinations of 6-BA and GAs had adverse effects on leaf and flower color of peony, making leaves emerge brown stripes and flower color be pale. The effect of P?333 retarded obviously flower bud sprouting and new shoot growth of peony in the next spring, PP333 application in early May increased flowering rates, delayed flowering and prolonged flowering time. Pruning method used in spring delayed obviously flowering of peony by 12~ 22 days.
