Feed mixing is an important part of feed processing technology in the agricultural industry. And the mixer occupies a pivotal position in the feed machinery. Nowadays, the biaxial paddle mixer has been widely applied in the feed production, due to its high efficiency, low residual volume, good mixing uniformity and easy maintenance. This article will start with the failure in a type of biaxial paddle mixers. Utilize reliability theory to analyze its reliability factors and then guide the reliability improvement of the mixer. The main researches in this paper are as follows:1. The first part is to understand the structure and working principle of biaxial paddle mixer so as to divide the mixer system into several subsystems, to classify the fault modes, and to code faults. According to the failure data (In accordance with the failure data), the failure positions, failure modes, failure causes of the mixer are analyzed in detail to obtain the primary failure information of the feed mixer.2. Set up the important model based on the mixer’s failure information and to determine the major index of subsystems in application of the reliability analysis method. Then find the vulnerable system and critical fault of the mixer. Designing the reliability allocation method of the mixer’s system in the light of the significance index of subsystems is to acquire the reliability of subsystems.3. Analyze its mechanical properties depending on the motion characteristics of the key component-drive shaft. The torque and bending moment of the shaft is tested during mixing, and then finalize the cause of shaft’s failure.4. Lastly, after determining the reasons of shaft’s failure, we can design the drive shaft —the reliability design of interference fit and the fatigue strength reliability design. This is done by the combination of the loads information and shaft’s mechanical properties and the use of "stress-strength" interference theory.
