Online diagnostics for vehicles plays an important role in fault detection, automotive electronics controllers and vehicle maintenance. This paper analyzes the present situation of research and application of vehicle diagnostic system, establishes an on-board diagnostic framework which consists self-diagnosis of the electronic control system and diagnostics graphic interface. Based on the study of K-bus electrical characteristics, it designs a K-bus to RS232 serial conversion circuit board. By establishing a serial of board diagnostic communication tests and analyzing the collected data, it makes a thorough study on the K-bus-based communication protocol.By studying the diagnostics graphic interface system, this paper implemented the development of PC-based diagnostic software, including serial communication, curve drawing function modules, and a good man-machine interface. In the study of self-diagnostic system of automotive electronics control, this paper studied the electronic controller self-diagnosis system model by extracting and judging the feature from a single signal, including signal acquisition and fault self-diagnosis, diagnosis communication system and MCU's multi-task Construction.It eventually set up a complete design model of K-board diagnostic systems and provided a practicable plan for the establishment of onboard diagnostic system based on K-line. The diagnostics graphic interface, software part of the diagnostic system, uses Visual C++ software to develop, which has a good portability. In diagnostics system, it uses Atmega16 MCU and its peripheral circuit to establish electronic controller self-diagnosis system and its software part, is written by the C language, and it provides design flow chart.
