Automotive BIW is an important part of a car and also the carrier of automotive parts. BIW is usually assembled by hundreds of complex curved surface sheet metal parts on welding lines in batch production and high speed, featuring numerous location points, welds, and intermediate processes. Hence, various welded size deviation sources are hardly to be avoided. BIW quality influences the whole vehicle quality decisively, and deviations of weld dimensions directly affect the final quality of vehicle, such as sealing, NVH, lifetime, performance, and appearance. BIW dimensional accuracy has been an important point concerned by auto industry and academy. Analyzing the actual status of the domestic auto industry, utilizing advanced statistical analysis methodology, fault diagnosis, and pattern recognition, this paper researched into deviations of weld dimensions, establishing systematic methodologies for control over dimensional deviation based on small sample. And the research output is applied to actual BIW weld processes.
