Local ethnic architecture highly gives expression to the organic integration of the building and the ecological environment, and its occurrence and development are all full of ideas of sustainable development. Among them, Xiangxi residential areas by accumulation of several centuries history, reflects natural ecological environment and social and human context of the distinctive characteristics in western Hunan. In the condition of the low level of science, technology and productivity, buildings in western Hunan mixes together with geographical environment, holds ahead of the eco-design theory, highlighting the ancient original concept of the ecological construction. The characteristic research of the combine with contractual space and the environmental space is of very important practical significance to the modern town of sustainable development, architectural design and academic research. Especially in recent years the nation paying attention to the village planning and construction, the villagers'housing construction is an important content, we can study the ecology of Xiangxi residents as an example, to learn the essence of Xiangxi residential areas, and to give some valuable comments for construction of villages.After papers overall introduced concept of modern urban construction and sustainable development thinking, ecological construction and its ecology, the thesis firstly in-depth analyses the transmission of traditional houses guiding ideology and current conditions. Secondly, it focuses on the Xiangxi residential constructions, and respectively, explores into the analysis and sum up the national characteristics of the residential building space from different Xiangxi ethnic groups. Moreover, the papers from the objective environment, the site layout of villages, residential building construction and other aspects, points separately the specific content of Xiangxi traditional houses'ecology, and illustrate with typical cases of Xiangxi traditional houses. Finally it draws the significance specifically of implementation of China's towns and villages, settlements and the construction of the ecological building.
