Concrete cracks have affected the structural durability and engineering safety seriously, which has attracted great attention from the research circles. The climate in the vast region in northwest China is arid with little rain due to the impact of the Siberian cold, permafrost, and modern glaciers. The annual average temperature is lower and the diurnal temperature range is large with strong ultraviolet radiation. The harsh climatic characteristics exacerbate the shrinkage of concrete. The concrete structures in the northwestern area are affected by wet and dry cycles, freeze-thaw cycles, salt corrosion, erosion and other natural factors. The surface of the structure is cracked easily. It is very important theoretically and practically to prevent and treat concrete cracks by materials design and construction techniques to ensure the durability of the structure. In this work, the concrete structure in arid regions in the cold northwestern area was investigated through case studies, comprehensive analysis, and experimental research to find out the influence of climate, environment, conservation conditions, stress distribution, and materials on the concrete cracking. The influences of cement species, sand ratio, water cement ratio, water amount, additives, and construction and technology on the concrete shrinkage characteristics were investigated to optimize the concrete materials used in concrete construction, mixing ratio, admixtures and construction techniques. The concrete shrinkage was reduced and the anti-cracking performance was improved. Preventive measures were proposed to avoid cracking in cold-arid areas. On the basis of experimental studies of concrete crack repair, cracks repair on the specific works were optimized, which provides a reference for further study on the prevention and control of concrete cracking in the northwestern region in China.
