Due to the air transmission corridor constraints of large cities and the sustained rapid growth of city load, pure AC lines can no longer meet the needs of social and economic development. Flexible DC power transmission has many advantages due to the use of voltage source converter's self-commutated characteristics. It is more important that we study on the High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC), especially the supplying of VSC-HVDC power in the city. This paper analyzes the current problems faced by city distribution network and the theory and technical superiority of flexible DC transmission. A study urban area grid model and a larger city network are built in PSS/E. Simulation verifies the improvement of system transient stability, short-circuit current level, low frequency oscillation and the voltage support the technology brings, which gives very good reference value for the VSC-HVDC used in the urban power grid in the future.
