It is of great significant to develop small hydropower, which is renewable and without pollution when energy resource scarcity and environment pollution is more serious. The construction and development of small hydropower is a key factor to build smart grid. This paper mainly studies the voltage and reactive power of small hydropower system and its control strategy. It analyses the characteristics of small hydropower operation and the problems need to be solved of Nanjing power grid.It simulates small hydropower's influence on voltage, network loss and reactive power. This paper put forward some voltage control technology, analyses the advantages and disadvantages for each technology program. At last, we complete the voltage and reactive power control strategy using voltage regulators, shunt reactors and other new treatment technology, and give suggestion of the technological transformation to Nanjing power system. This paper builds up the simulation model in MATLAB, BPA,PSCAD to complete the simulation analysis. The results illustrate that the methods presented in this paper are able to solve the major problem of Nanjing power system rich in small hydropower, as provide reliable reference to practical engineering.
