With the development of power grids interconnection, the possibility of complex faults is increasing. As the first line to guarantee safe operation of power grids, the reliability of relay protection is closely related to power grids'safe operation. The reliability assessment to relay protection system can discover the hidden failures of relay protection device, to avoid the expansion of accident due to the incorrect action of relay protection. In this paper, there are three aspects to research:Considering with the protection system reliability requirements and costs, a novel algorithm of determining the optimal routine test interval of the dual-redundant relay protection system is proposed to guide the electric power sector to arrange the reasonable maintenance plans; Based on the used-cost of relay protection system, a reliability model of component importance is proposed to identify the weak points of the protection system and to prioritize the system design. Based on the protection criteria of the relay protection device, the method of reliability assessment is proposed to achieve a comprehensive assessment to the reliability of relay protection system.
