The transient mathematical model for the STATCOM in d-q synchronous reference frame is developed. It applies the inverse system method based on nonlinear feedback linearization theory. An inverse system model of STATCOM is deduced and a pseudo linear system is constructed. Then, by synthesizing the pseudo linear system, a sliding mode variable structure controller is proposed. This article focuses on the impact of dynamic response performance on the HVDC system failure by the use of different reactive power compensation devices, for examples, SVC and STATCOM. And STATCOM with normal PI control are compared to STATCOM with variable structure control. The simulation results show that STATCOM with variable structure control are better than STATCOM with PI control to enhance the static and dynamic performance on the HVDC system failure.
