According to the gas discharge theory and the characteristics of insulator surface discharge and spectral properties of corona discharge, UV pulse method used to detect insulator discharge is proposed, and the UV pulse detection system based on solar-blind photomultiplier was developed. This system has high sensitivity and can detect weak UV signal generated by insulator discharge. It has good detecting capabilities and can effectively quantify the discharge strength, and it is a new method for effectively detecting discharge. Experiment test for polluted insulator discharge was carried out with the UV pulse detection system in laboratory, according to the measured UV pulse parameters of polluted insulator, the insulator surface ESDD was predicted with a prediction models based on least squares support vector machine and it achieved good results. The method provides an accurate and effective way for ESDD on-line monitoring and has a certain practical value.
