Ship power plant which provides all kinds of energy for the ship, is an important part of the ship, and about 60%-80% failures of the ship occurred in the power plant. Thus research on the marine power plant fault is particularly important.Based on the ship power plant, this paper firstly introduces the definition of fault, fault classification, and describes the process of finding fault reasons in practice. The relationship matrix between fault reasons and malfunction symptoms can be obtained by failure analysis and historical fault data and can be reduced by the application of rough set theory. After the comparison and research of reduction methods, a heuristic attribute reduction algorithm that is based on discernibility matrix, attribute importance and property frequency, which combines the advantages of attribute reduction methods based on discernibility matrix or attribute importance, is identified. And the malfunction reasons are diagnosed based on fuzzy mathematics method. Finally the disposal of malfunction can be obtained. On the basis of above, the design and development of ship power plant fault disposal system is completed, the system design consists of the design of system functional, the design of process of fault diagnosis, the design of database. The function of this system includes device management, common fault management, fault diagnosis, fault disposal.The research and development of this system, not only make it convenient for crew to learn and judge a variety of common fault, but also to help staff find cause of the malfunction quickly, further deal with the fault. At the same time in the future we can combine this system with the other two kinds of fault diagnosis method (the method based on the accurate mathematical model and the method based on signal processing) to form an integrated fault diagnosis system.
