The research in the design of the temporary shelter after the catastrophe is a brand-new topic. The temporary resettlement in Wechuan after the 5.12 earthquake bares China's inexperience in this field, especially in the building of temporary houses. This thesis is written timely. The writer bases the study on the building principles and methods of post-cataclysm temporary shelters in detail on the participation in two building projects in the charge of Shigeru Ban, a renowned Japanese architecture through the unusual angles in design and emergency so as to offer fast, efficient and sustainable methods in building the temporary shelters after a cataclysm. The point will be expounded in four aspects.Chapter One points out the urgent significance of the research under current circumstances as well as the object of the study, the overall frame and the approach used.Chapter Two to Five gives priority to Shigeru Ban's research, his Paper-Loghouse in particular. Then the writer makes comparison between the Paper-Loghouse and two buildings (the temporary shelter of Southwest Jiaotong University and that of Hualin Shool, both of which the writer helped to build), pointing out the disadvantages of the Paper-Loghouse and the basic principles and methods in establishing the post-cataclysm temporary shelters. These principles and methods will pave the way for the later studies in this field.Chapter Six focuses on the two temporary buildings constructed in Wenchuan after the great earthquake, pointing out the disadvantages and proposing some advice of improving.Chapter Seven puts forward 4 tactics in building the temporary shelters after a disaster:the possibility of finding a kind of structural support which can be made and shaped as fast as possible with local construction materials, the fast production of sustainable environment-friendly material protection, or the ready-made "containers" to live in. Furthermore, the writer lists the detailed ways and designs under the guidance of the four tactics.Seeing that up to now there are not many the researches in the post-cataclysm temporary shelter, the writer concentrates on specific examples to make suggestions on the building principles and methods in hoping that the suggestions would be helpful for later research.
