The residual heat removal pump is a main component of RRA and is the only nuclear secondary pump which is installed inside the nuclear island except the main pump and which significantly affects whether the reactor can shut-down. In China, the nuclear pumps relied on the import for a long time. At present, several types of nuclear tertiary pumps can be manufactured by own. However, the main nuclear pump and nuclear secondary pump is still lacking. Therefore, it is of great importance to realize the independently research and produce of the nuclear device. In this study, numerical investigation on the flow field inside the residual heat removal pump was conducted by using CAD software CAXA, Pro/E and CFD software NUMECA based on a residual heat removal pump model which was developed by a company. According to the simulation results, the flow field inside the pump was obtained and some optimum design was proposed. The matching problem between the rotor part and stator part was solved after the optimization of the impeller, diffusion vane, meridian path and volute. The total efficiency of the residual heat removal pump was increased by 10 percents, which dramatically reduces the operating costs and promotes its competitive power in the international market. This study not only gave some reference to the analysis of flow field inside the residual heat removal pump and the optimization proposal, but also concluded some common features of the single-stage single-suction centrifugal pump design. This method laid the foundation for the future design and manufacture of pumps, which is much instructive and economical.
