In this thesis, thing and man are regarded as the breakthrough points, which are the main elements of landscape design at colleges and universities. Combined with current domestic and foreign research findings on landscape design at colleges and universities, a further research is carries on design sectors and design elements involved in landscaping at colleges and universities. From the point of ontology, thing and man are regarded as the two main elements in landscape at colleges and universities based on analysis. In terms of thing, every factor must be based on scientificity and systematicness during application. Meanwhile, the landscape design of surroundings should be subordinate to geographical factors. The things in landscape design at colleges and universities mainly consist of plant, road, waterscape, opuscule, lighting and way finding system. In terms of man, the landscape design of campus should be guided by culture. At the same time, it should not be overlooked that interaction of man and surroundings has an influence on landscape design, namely, surroundings at colleges and universities can affect human's behavior, and vice versa. Aimed at this, proper guide and arrangements are necessary in design.The application of landscape design at colleges and universities are mainly composed of four parts, including partition mode in space, specific applications of every physical element in design, application of color in landscape at colleges and universities, and application of scientificity and systematicness in design cycle. The global design methods are landscape gardening and urbanization. From the standpoint of design principles, every element's details should be scientific and artistic during practice. At the same time, every design method and element should be merged together so that design style of landscape at colleges and universities is both systematic and individual. Moreover, it displays not only modern but also geographical national traits.
