With the improvement and expansion of the 500kV and 220kV power grid, the 220kV power grid in Anhui running with voltage grade and district–dividing is a general trend. In this paper, the analysis of causes, types, the advantages and disadvantages of the electromagnetic loop is firstly given. Then, combining with the power grid status and the development plan of Anhui power grid, the feasibility for open-loop operation of the southern and northern river electromagnetic loop networks has been calculated in two stages. The results show that, at the first stage when the 500kV Dangtu switching station and the 5310 Qingdang line are put into operation, it is proposed that the southern and northern river electromagnetic loop networks would not be opened as a result of the decreasing accepting capacity of power for Chaohu grid under the open-loop operation. At the second stage, when the 500kV Shaoguan station is put into operation, the operation type of 220kV and 500kV grid can be flexibly adjusted and the power demand for Chaohu area can also be met. Therefore it is proposed to open the southern and northern river electromagnetic loop networks, but it need to take some necessary security and stability control measures to improve the 220kV transmission capacity of Ma-wu grid.
