With the demand of the underground constructions engineering, tunnel borer recently tends to be larger sized, longer life-span, high automation and wide adaptableness. With the wide use of the underground engineering constructions, it is realized that tunnel borer should be manufactured in our country, especially the cutterhead design of tunnel borer. China, however, is with an enormous territory, and the characteristics of rock in provinces are complicated. Because of the complicated characteristics of rock, it is very difficult to design the cutterhead of tunnel borer. The tunnel borers, used in the underground engineering constructions, are mostly produced by companies at home, who cooperate with foreign companies. However, the cutterheads of tunnel borers are all designed by companies abroad. So we feel eager for cutterheads with independent intellectual property rights.To solve the problems mentioned above, the author studies the frame of tunnel boring machine cutterhead, the principle of cutters breaking rock and the forces of the cutters, the forces of the cutterhead, the layout of cutterhead and the VB programming. The main research work and achievements are as follows:(1) Analyzing the types of cutters and the breaking rock principle, the forces of cutters and the anticipated force models. It tended to determine the anticipated force models used in the layout of cutterhead in this paper .(2) Studying the forces of cutterhead influenced by forces of cutters, the force of inertia in the process of cutterhead wheeling. Summing up the force model of cutterhead and calculating the imbalance force as well as imbalance moment.(3) Based on the principle of cutterhead design, summing up the main parameters of cutterhead and method of cutterhead layout. Calculating the imbalance force as well as imbalance moment and trying to lessen them. At last, the layout of tunnel boring machine cutterhead was determined.(4) The special software of TBM cutterhead design was developed, which encapsulated all the computer instructions of TBM cutterhead design. It was possible that the users could concentrate their energy on setting the parameters. The software would automatically calculate the imbalance force and imbalance moment to get the main paramters and the coordinates of cutters on the cutterhead, then to save results. (5) Contrasting the layout of TBM in Dahuofang Project with the layout of cutterhead disigned by the developed software, it was proved that the force model and the layout of cutterhead were feasible and valid.
