The Analysis And Extraction Of Regional Symbols

As an intensify of crisis of urban characters, people's requirement of regional characteristic design is becoming more and more imperative.In study of the theory of postmodernism, critical regionalism has been widely accepted. Critical regionalism insists that design should not only respect the regional technical resources and social cultural characters, but also stress the significance of regional culture and adopt a critical attitude toward it under the context of modern technology. Therefore, the research on regional culture is mainly based on an analysis of regional characters.Regional culture consists of many aspects including local natural geographic characters and unique cultural characters. All of them are the regional symbols which representative and carry forward traditional culture and meanwhile they are also the language of regional culture. So, the research on these symbols has become an inevitable part in the new extension of the traditional local culture.This paper studies regional design from the perspective of semiotics, taking the analysis and extraction of regional symbols as a main research content, which will act as the first part of regional design process and provide materials for the use of regional symbols in the following part in order to laid a foundation for the further research .All if those above are prerequisites for regional design.The content of this paper can be classified into three different parts.The first part is a section which provides some problems, mainly including the content of research context, research content and theory definition. This part acts as an introduction of this article.The second part is a section which analyzes these problems, mainly focusing on the critical regionalism, the brief introduction of research status of theories relating to symbols, research content of regional symbols and the elaboration of research significance. This part acts as the first and second part of this article.The third part is a section which aims at solving these problems, mainly including an analysis and extraction of regional symbols and a study of principle. Meanwhile, this part takes the garden landscape in the southern Yangtze River as an example, analyzing and extracting the regional symbols. Finally, this paper briefly discusses the application of symbols and discovers the practical design. This part acts as the third, forth and fifth part of this article.
