Operation reliability is one of the basic requirements of power system, but because of man-made, weather and many other reasons, the power failure inevitably occurred. When the power system fault occurs, the dispatchers requires to quickly determine the cause of the malfunction, determine components, fault removal and the restoration of the system components in order to reduce the damage to the electrical elements, as soon as possible to restore power to customers, the loss by to a minimum.Large-scale power systems, changing operating mode, when the failure occurs, protection relays and the circuit breaker may maloperation or disoperation, alarms information may loss or distortion in the process of transmission. All these factors make the actual fault complex, which makes it difficult for dispatchers to make decision correctly in a short period of time. Fault Diagnosis System can help dispatchers find fault components quickly in order to restore the system to normal operation as soon as possible.Genetic algorithm in the last century since the nineties, in the field of fault diagnosis done a lot of applications, has also become a more mature approach. Genetic algorithm transforms fault diagnosis problem into 0, 1 integer programming problem, and then solves it using optimization algorithms. In this paper, based on the work of our predecessors, a number of improvements - single point of fault completely initialized, retaining 10% of the fine, three cross points, according to individual fitness and population average fitness adaptive adjustment of the cross and mutation probability -are used in the genetic algorithm. These improvements enhance the convergence performance and optimization capacity of genetic algorithm.Genetic algorithm has a certain degree of fault tolerance. On dealing with information of incomplete protection relays and the circuit breakers, this paper processing in genetic operation and this method reduce the possibility of justice and deviation.This paper establish fault diagnosis procedures based on specific example, and compare with known example to prove the algorithm raised by this paper has the ability to determine the fault components accurately respectively according to complete or in complete protection relays and the circuit breakers. Genetic algorithm has certain advantages in dealing with the issue of fault diagnosis and has broad prospects in appliance.
