The rainfall hazard is one of the main forms of the highway slope hazards in North Shaanxi loess areas. Because of the special engineering properties of the loess, and the importance of highways to the economy development and people's daily life, the study on the forcasting and pre-research of highway side slope rainfall hazard in the loess areas has its important realistic significance.With the analysis of the loess characteristics and field observations, this paper summarizes that the main influences of the loess characteristics upon the highway side slope lies in: the specificity, zonality and structural nature of the highway side slope. Based on the environment factors of the highway slope hazards, such as the climatesof North Shaanxi loess areas, the terrain and landform,and the geological condition etc., combining the field survey and data analysis, the main types of the failures of side slope rainfall hazard are as follows: muddy flow, slope erosion and slope instability, and it is pointed out that the highway side slope rainfall hazard mainly has something to dowith rainfall and the side slope condition of itself in the North Shaanxi loess areas.Though on-the-spot investigations and theories analysis, combining the slope hazards data, it is concluded that the main factors that influence stability of side slope are: side slope structure, the morphological character of side slope and vegetation characteristics etc. Associating the meteorological rainfall data, the forecasting model of the highway side slope rainfall hazard in loess areas, which provides an important basis for the prevention and mitigation of the North Shaanxi highway side slope disaster, is put forward.
