The reflective cracking problem exists both in the asphalt overlay on old concrete and in the newly built asphalt pavement on rigid or semirigid base. How to delay or restrain the development of the reflective cracking is an urgent problem. SAMPAVE (Stress Absorbing Mixtures Pavement) is a new kind of technology to delay or restrain the development of the reflective cracking.Firstly, many factors has bing analyzed on the asphalt binder of the SAMPAVE crack resistante layer, the modified scheme applying to project was put forward and was confirmed by SHRP index that unified with the road performance.Secondly, in the mixture proportion design, the optimum asphalt content was designed by the SGC (superpave gyratory compactor) and the Marshall design procedure. Marshall method can determine the optimum asphalt content and when it declines 0.2% it can be applied into actual project. The low temperature curvature tests and water stability tests validate its road performance.Thirdly, besause the present evaluation method on asphalt mixture is not suitable for the stress absorbing mixtures, the penetration test and low temperature SCB fatigue test were put forward for SAMPAVE for the first time. They can effectively validate its fatigue resistance and high-temperature deformation.Lastly, SAMPAVE mixtures are succeedly paved and constructed. That unifies the room research and the project practice and impels its widely application. It also can promote the application of the new asphalt pavement and the perpetual pavement structures and impel the highway construction. It is important for the highway construction.
