The theory of performance-based seismic design, as a brand new seismic design theory, emerged in 1990s. It already excited great interest among the researchers, and has been a research focus in seismic engineering area. With the effects of the design earthquake, the structures using performance-based seismic design theory have the predicable earthquake-resisting capability, and the performance objectives can be chosen as needed. Based on that, the thesis has combined the characteristics of our country's bridge structure, and the performance-based seismic design on reinforced concrete pier has been studied. Overall, the main contents are as follows:(1) On the basis of reviewing a large number of references of domestic and foreign countries, the development process and research status of the performance-based seismic design have been summarized. By analyzing the performance levels and limit stations of the RC pier, the displacement at the top of the pier has been selected as quantitative indicator of the performance.(2) Analyzing the curvature of circular and rectangular RC pier section by using the material with different size, reinforcement ratio and axial compression. Then, the results were further analyzed using regressive methods to get the relationships between the curvature and the strain of the material.(3) Taking the single pier for example, the relationship between the top displacement and the section curvature of plastic hinge zones has been studied. Thus, the strain of materials and the top displacement can be linked together through the parameter of section curvature.(4) Taking the theory of performance-based seismic design as guidance, and a seismic design was carried out to a single pier structure by using the direct displacement-based seismic design method, to realize different performance objectives. The results is fully compared in the end.
