As a clean and regenerative energy, wind power generation is developing quickly nowadays. The research on wind power generation is becoming more deeply. However, it is difficult to take the experimental research of wind power generation due to the limit of nature environments and site conditions, especially at the prior period of research and under extreme or fault conditions. At this time, building models to simulate and analyze is an effective method to research. The subject background of this paper is to develop a distributed power system simulation tool, which is a cooperating subject with Mitsubishi Heavy Industry. Then against the shortages of the available simulation software for the wind power system, new wind power system simulation tools are developed based on Scilab/Scicos, which is a kind of open-source software, and the running and controlling of wind power system is analyzed under the fault conditions. The development of wind power at home and abroad is outlined at first. The characteristics of different wind turbines are compared. Wind power generation system under the conditions of power system faults is described. Then the modeling process in Scilab/Scicos is described in detail, which is based on the non-causal modeling language to establish the model and suitable for the simulation of hybrid electric power system. Moreover, a simulation toolbox for wind power system has been developed, including squirrel-cage induction generator(SCIG), permanent magnet synchronous generator(PMSG), doubly-fed induction generator(DFIG), transformer, power line and fault, etc. Scilab/Scicos software is extended and applied to the wind power system. Comparisons of simulation result verify the correctness of the developed models, which provide a new and effective way to simulate the wind power system.Using the developed wind power simulation toolbox, the simulation model of the grid-connected and variable-speed constant-frequency PMSG wind turbine and the DFIG wind turbine are established and analyzed under fault conditions. The impact of voltage drop, the capacity of low voltage ride through and the protection measure are analyzed.
