The quench of high temperature SMES magnet in power network will affect SMES system operation, make equipment's damage, even affect the reliability of the power system, and is a key problem for the practical application of superconducting electric power technology. It's also to be a further research problem of quickly and accurately detecting the quench signal and protecting magnet after quench. This paper designs the quench protection system of SMES magnet based on the characteristics of SMES system.This paper is divided into three parts, including quench propagation characteristic research of high temperature superconducting tapes, quench detection research of high temperature SMES magnet, and quench protection research of high temperature SMES magnet. In the first part, development and quench characteristic of high temperature superconducting magnet are introduced, and make research on quench propagation characteristic by quench propagation experiment of high temperature superconducting tapes. In the second part, advantages and disadvantages of superconducting power devices' quench detection methods are summarized at home and abroad. On this basis, chooses improved partial active power detecting method and designs the quench detection system in SMES magnet based on the characteristics of SMES system. The quench detection system can quickly and accurately detect the quench signal and provide the reliable precondition for quench protection which were tested by experiments. Finally, quench protection methods of superconducting power devices are systematically induced and divided into active and passive method. The principle of the active protection method is to divert most energy into additional equipments. While the passive method is to protect magnets by accelerating quench propagation. This paper selects active protection method. The result shows that the quench protection system can basically meet quench protective requirements of SMES system.
