This paper adopts finite element method to study the load carrying capacity and failure mode of the wall-stud system of cold-formed steel residential under vertical load, and the suggested design method is propose.Finite element model is established to analyze the wall-stud system. Shell element is employed to model the stud and wallboard, and beam element is used to model screws which connect the stud and track, wallboard together, and contact element is used to model contact between stud and track. The effect of material non-linear, geometric non-linear and contact non-linear are considered during the process of solving. As a result, the ultimate load and failure mode are gained. By the analyses for load capacity, failure mode and deformation of single stud, unlined stud and those with plasterboards on one side and orient stand board (OSB) on another side, the accuracy of the finite element method in this paper is validated. The influence of the parameters, including the thickness of sheathings, the spacing of studs, steel grade and the screw spacing, to the load carrying capacity of wall-stud is analyzed by validated finite element method. The results of the parametric analyses have shown that: when the thickness of sheathing is above 11mm, the increase of the thickness of sheathing can not enhance the axial load carrying capacity of studs; when the studs spacing increase from 400mm to 600mm, the load carrying capacity increase slightly; when the screw spacing contacted board and middle members is larger than 300mm, the decrease of the screw spacing can increase the axial load carrying capacity significantly; when the screw spacing contacted board and middle members is shorter than 300mm, the increase of the axial load carrying capacity since the decrease of screw spacing is not salient. The load carrying capacity of the wall-stud system which is often used in cold-formed steel residential under vertical load is studded. The suggestion of design is proposed referring the specification GB500182002, and the accuracy of suggestion of design is validated by experiments of home and abroad.
