Through investigation of various failures of power transformer, the paper summarizes all the possible transformer's failure modes, and elaborates on the primary failure reasons, the impacts of failure, failure symptoms, failure detection and maintenance methods in detail. Based on the brief presentation of knowledge of Fault Tree Analysis (FTA), the fault tree of power transformer is built in order to classify the basic fault types accurately and legibly. the power transformer's faults possibility is studied, calculating fault frequency, and arranging it in the light of a certain standard. Then according to the influence factors of sequential conference, the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) and extension method are adopted to calculate the sequential severity of every fault type, and then make a comprehensive classification of it, achieving the risk assessment of transformer operation. Two examples are taken to prove the method to be correct and feasible.
