Corona discharge in high altitude area of western China should be paid more attention than that in plain area when building UHV transmission project. It has great significance for the design of UHV transmission project to research corona onset characteristics of conductors at different altitudes. UV imaging detection technology is applied in this paper to study the measurement method of corona onset voltage of conductors. Corona onset characteristics tests of conductors in corona cage are carried out in four different altitude regions by this method. Corona onset voltages of four type conductors under dry and artificial rain test conditions are obtained. Based on the test results, current altitude correction methods of corona onset voltage are discussed, and an available altitude correction formula is obtained in this paper. It provides a technical support for the design and operation of UHV transmission project in western China.
