With the development of distributed generation technology, small scale grid-connected wind power expands the availability of wind resources and greatly reduces the cost of wind energy generation system (WEGS) in the region where there are low-voltage grids and low speed wind. Therefore, research on grid-tied application of small wind turbines becomes a new-direction research. Presentation of an efficient, practical, low-cost small-scale wind power converter topology and simple control schemes of the converter-based WEGS are the current key points and difficulties of small-scale wind power technology.This article briefly addresses the state of art of domestic and foreign small-scale grid-connected wind power generation, and discusses the problems of the existing typical wind power converter topology used for small-scale grid-tied WEGS. The advantages and disadvantages of current source converter (CSC) compared to voltage source converter (VSC) and modulation techniques of CSC are analyzed. It presents high-inductance permanent magnet synchronous generator (HIPMSG) and new CSC composed of three-phase diode rectifier and current source inverter without DC-link inductor. Research on the characteristics of HIPMSG and operation principle of the new CSC is done. Control algorithms of variable-speed disturbance maximum power point tracking (MPPT) and current tracking double-loop control strategy based on software phase-locked loop (SPLL) are proposed and designed. Besides, a 10KW small size grid-connected wind power generation experimental platform is designed. Key control algorithms are modeled and simulated. Simulation results validate that the proposed new current source converter topology and control strategy is feasible.
