Brakes are the key components of vehicle braking system; their performance is one of the most important factors of the driving security. As the development of the basic facilities, the need of vehicles is increasing. In order to improve the performance of braking system, and to ensure the driving security, it has been a very urgent duty for vehicle designing and manufacturing departments to do researches and improvements on the performance. The paper mainly researched on the service brakes of trucks. Firstly, It analyzed the theory of service braking system, introduced the relative contents, including design theory, different structures, parts and units select. Secondly, according to research on the requirements of braking performance, and the testing standards in China and abroad, It summarized that the main evaluation index of braking performance and the key parameters of the testing. In the third, comparing the different types of test benches for braking performance testing, the inertia dynamometer was proposed to develop. Based on the design theory of the dynamometer, it developed a single ended inertia brake dynamometer for braking performance testing of the factual production. At last, according to testing of different structural brakes, comparing and analyzing the result of test, some important factors which affect the braking performance are showed, and some suggestions for braking design and the material select are given. These factors provide the theory basis for braking performance improving. It also indicates that some of the factors are not only considered by braking design departments but also by manufacturing departments. Then the developing trend of service brakes of trucks is stated.
