The corrugated pipe culvert is a certain type of culvert which is linked and assembled by corrugated pipes or plates. By adopting such flexible and high intensity steel corrugated pipe culvert, it not only can solve the culvert's destruction problem due to uneven settlement by its own adaptive ability to the deformation of foundation, but also can distribute the load effect and utilize the advantage of steel structure to the maximum extent. The latter function is according to the existence of axial direction's corrugation, which has an excellent characteristic of force that can make both of its axial and radial direction bear stress and strain caused by force.The corrugated pipe structure is close to the idealize underground infrastructure. When installed underground, the pipe and the surrounding soil layer forms a flexible arch structure and an elastic layer which can uniformly transfer the soil pressure. Compared with the concrete and masonry culverts, corrugated metal pipe culvert has better seismic capacity, and it can well suit for the cases with more complicated terrain. large settlement and deformation and various backfill height. In addition, the corrugated metal pipe has such advantages as lightness, short construction period. Only a few work procedures and low maintenance cost, etc. Thus, it can effectively reduce the labor intensity and save the labor and material resources.Cherished with two merits from the perspectives of wonderful mechanical benavior and desirable economic benefits, the corrugated metal pipe has a broad and great application promise. At the chronic frost soil areas in US and Canada, the pipes has been extensively used in highway engineering. Successful application experience has been accumulated with some related design., manufacturing and construction manuals. In China, however, the pipe is still in its pilot stage. The related codes needs to be made via research and reference to the foreign techniques. Based and funded by a technical project on Qinghai-Tibet Railway, the mechanical and structural behavior of corrugated metal pipe is further explored.In this thesis, by using finite element analysis software Midas, the maximal pipe span is finally obtained from the relationship among pipe span, the deformation of pipe top and stress, through the calculation of the displacement of pipe top and maximal stress with the conditions that above filling's height, pipe's height and pipe's wall thickness is certain.
