The 8 mm wave radiation measurement method of insulator contamination was mainly studied in this paper. By using the layered-media model, the 8 mm wave radiation characteristic of insulator contamination was analyzed firstly. Based on the radiation transfer equation and antenna theory, the theoretical calculation method of antenna temperature was derived under clear sky and cloud weather conditions. On this basis, an 8 mm Dicke radiometer suitable for insulator contaminant detection was designed and made. And then, performance testing results showed that all indexes of this radiometer can achieve the test requirement. By using this radiometer, the artificial contaminated XP-70 insulators were measured under the clear sky condition. The relation between Antenna temperature and ESDD was obtained under the drying, moist, and different NSDD values conditions, and the effect of main factors was analyzed. At last, the experience formula of antenna temperature was achieved by fitting experimental data, and the real-time monitoring system suitable for the engineering application was established.
