Waterfront space is the transition space between hard interface of urban construction and soft interface of water. It is also an important public open space, playing the role of a city's "window" or "edge". Since 1960s, urban waterfront development has made remarkable achievements all over the world, especially in Europe, the United States, and other developed countries. In recent years, many cities in our country have carried out such projects as the development based on environmental protection of the Funan River in Chengdu and of the Suzhou River in Shanghai, the protection and re-development of the historic waterfront "10-Miles Qinhuai Scenery" in Nanjing, and the re-development of Old Waitan in Ningbo. These waterfront development projects brought cities great social, economic, and ecological benefits, as well as some problems. In this paper, we integrate multi-disciplinary knowledge of science of morphology, architecture, urban design, landscape design, landscape ecology, and urban ecology, hope to explore a path of Integration of urban waterfront space and landscape System, and make our own efforts for the urban waterfront development in our country. This article is divided into five parts:In the first part, combing the background and state of research in the world, we try to figure out the meaning and methods for the research, and re-define important concepts. The second part is the analysis of structure and levels of urban waterfront space and landscape system, and the summary of the principles of its design. In the third part, we suggest a general solution to each element in the urban waterfront space design, hoping to achieve our prospects in society, ecology, and economy. In the fourth part, comparing with former research and theory, we study the waterfront regions in Changsha and Yueyang City, analyze gains and losses of the landscape design, and verify the former theory. At the same time, we put forward corresponding ideal design proposals, which are hoped to be references for later projects. In the fifth part, there are our own speeches of our research, and points out the limitations during case researches.
