When the original urban water supply system cannot meet the daily demand requirements of city, we need to rehabilitate the water supply network. The objective of the optimal rehabilitation design of the water supply network is to maximum the general benefit of the water supply with the limited construction inputs. There are a variety of methods in optimal design of the water supply network, including simulated annealing algorithm, an effective global optimization algorithm, which has been widely used in solving large combinatorial optimization problems. SA is easy to describe and has high operating efficiency as well as flexibility. Meanwhile, it also can overcome the dependence on the initial solution. Therefore we introduce SA as optimization algorithm for the rehabilitation of the water supply network.SA is a global optimization random algorithm which simulates the annealing of metal. In this paper, SA is discussed in detail and improved in two aspects how to reduce the running time and improve the quality of solutions. Then a case of the optimal rehabilitation design of water supply network in the south campus of Hefei University of Technology is given as an example in which we adopt following methods including SA, SA with memory, temper-SA and fast-temper-SA. By comparing the result of these methods, we obtain the optimal solution and the optimal algorithm that meet the requirement of water demand, water pressure and economical efficiency.
