Web Light-Gauge steel joist structure system (Web steel) is a new type of steel structure, coming from Canada with such many advantages as higher standardizing, assigning space flexible, good performance of the seismic resistant, industrialization producing, short construction period, protecting environment and economizing energy sources et al. This kind of structure has been used mostly in low story residential building for 20 years in North America. It agrees our national estate policy applying Web steel to multiple-story residential building. Web steel has a good future in China.Web steel is made of small trusses and has complex constitution. This paper adopts the finite element method to create a three dimensional nonlinear finite element model. In the finite element model, a nonlinear spring link element is used to model sheathing-to-framing connectors. The analysis shows that FEM is appropriate for this case, because the bearing capacity and deformation of walls are close to the tests of Wuhan University of Technology. Then the effects of height-width ratio and screw spacing on the shear resistance and the ductility coefficients of the walls are analyzed.Based on the finite element model of compound bearing walls, this paper uses a simplified method to establish the planar analytical model for light gauge steel framed residences, and studies the time history response of the residences under horizontal earthquake. The important influencing parameter (screw spacing) is studied in detail. According to the analytical results, the applicable ranges of the residences when used in areas where the seismic fortification intensities are7 and 8 are explored. This lays a foundation for promoting the application of light gauge steel framed system in multi-storey residences for our country.
