The exhaust noise is dominant in the diesel engine noise, and to install the exhaust muffler is the most efficient way to reduce it. The traditional exhaust muffler is normally constructed by the combination of perforated tube, perforated plate, as well as expanded chamber, it is with the low noise reduction performance, high exhausted resistance, i.e. high power loss and high fuel consumption. In this paper, a new principle of exhaust silencer for the single-cylinder diesel engine based on active noise reduction has been proposed, and the comparative tests of noise-reduction performance and pressure loss with a traditional silencer were conducted. It is concluded that the noise-reduction performance and air dynamics of new silencer are better than the traditional one.The numerical simulation on the internal air field, including air velocity, air pressure as well as air turbulent kinetic energy distribution was performed in software FLUENT. Based on the simulation results, the new silencer was optimized and modified, and the results show that the air dynamic performance was improved after the modified design.
