With the high-speed, heavy-load, light and precise trend in machine, the requirements for the design of cam mechanisms are more and more widely. The cam mechanisms are demanded not only to have a better transmission performance in kinematics and dynamics, but also stability of performance and good manufacturability. At the same time, the working performances of machine products will be improved and the manufacturing cost will be reduced.The traditional design method doesn't consider the impact of many controlled and uncontrolled factors on cam mechanism quality which should be taken into account in designing. Robust design is a very effective engineering way which can ensure the quality of cam products when many controlled and uncontrolled factors have small difference with their design values by designing parameters and controlling their tolerances.In this paper, the basic theory of robust design is introduced to the cam mechanism design methods. The basic concepts of robustness of cam mechanism and cam mechanism robust design are addressed, the various basic elements of robust model for cam mechanism design are analyzed, the properties of mechanism quality and impact of controlled and uncontrolled factors on them are discussedAccording to the instance analysis on robust design of cam mechanism, determination of the design parameter, target function, restriction condition and establish the robust model about high-speed cam mechanism. The general design steps of cam mechanism robust design are presented.
