Distribution network reconfiguration is the important measure of optimal operation of distribution systems, which may bring out great benefit both in economy and in society. Distribution network reconfiguration is defined as altering the topological structures of the system by operating the sectionalizing and tie switches.The distribution reconfiguration can reduce the power loss, and eliminate the overload of the lines, and improve the power quality, and restore the power supply to non-fault area in the distribution network and so on. The paper proposed a approach for distribution network reconfiguration based on Improvement Binary Particle Swarm Optimization which is a novel intelligent optimization algorithm. That is significant not only to solve the problem itself but also to develop the intelligent technology in the new field.Firstly, a novel distribution network reconfiguration algorithm based on Improvement Binary Particle Swarm Optimization was presented. The cause of infeasible solutions of distribution network reconfiguration was analyzed; graph theory was employed to modify place update rule of Particle Swarm Optimization, which could greatly reduce infeasible solutions.Secondly, Hierarchy of distribution network was utilized to modify backward/forward power flow algorithm, which could calculate branch currents and node voltages in the same layer simultaneity.Finally, The numerical test results reveal that the distribution network reconfiguration algorithm based on Improvement Binary Particle Swarm Optimization can not only increase probability of feasible solutions produced during search process, but also has higher search efficiency and calculation rate than other methods.
