In the construction of highway, bump at bridge-head is easily caused by bad disposal of backfill soil behind abutment. Bump do much harm to high grade highway. It can not provide a comfortable and safe riding surrounding. Furthermore it damage to the work condition of bridge and accelerate the destruction of bridge pavement, which cause great economical loss and bad social influence. The problem how to treat backfill soil behind abutment for controlling bump at bridge-head is paid more and more attention by people.The use of geocell in bridge abutment is a new technology and process to solve this problem. Mechanics of backfill soil behind abutment made use of geocell is analyzed in the thesis. Considering lever shearing stress, stress field and displacement field are calculated, based on which the mechanic of geocell's decreasing unequal settlement is analyzed. Design and construction process are mentioned in the thesis by using the optimum theory. In addition, method is studied to predict the settlement of soil behind abutment. In the end, test result proves the efficiency of geocell. Related construction method is summarized.Geocell has been applied in domestic highway construction field, but the skill has been not mature. The result can popular the application of geocell in highway engineering. At the same time, it also can promote the application skill be more mature.
