High-altitude nuclear explosion can produce high-intensity electromagnetic pulse (EMP). Nuclear electromagnetic pulse(NEMP) can couple very high energy into C4I system(command, communication, control, computer and information system) through the antenna, metal cables and apertures, therefore it brings serious threat. Consequently, the theory and technology relating to EMP and EMP protection has become the focus research in developed countries of the world.This paper first analyzes the generating mechanism of NEMP, the waveform and parameters, the development trend of NEMP, coupling ways and damage effects. Then we study the front door coupling and the back door coupling of NEMP. Finally we discuss the NEMP protection technology. The coupling mechanism is analyzed. A detailed comparison is made among a wide range of standard time domain waveforms from domestic and abroad. Coupling models of the antenna, the transmission line and the aperture are established separately. By writing codes and simulating, we obtain some useful conclusions and data. The technology and certain measures against EMP attack are discussed through three aspects such as shielding, filtering and grounding. Some EMP protection devices are introduced. The shielding effectiveness of several shielding materials is tested, and the analysis of results is presented. Analysis, simulation and prediction of the shielding effectiveness of the electromagnetic shielding door is made. A deep analysis of comprehensive protection of communication cables is given. A feasible protection plan is proposed to a practical electromagnetic shielding shelter.
