As the basic equipment of electric energy production, generator play very important role in safety and stability of the whole power system. When the excitation partly loss or completely, the generator's operation status and performance will change tremendously, which decides the asynchronous operation performance and illustrates whether the synchronous generator can run with asynchronous state. So it's very important to research the generator with loss of excitation which is valuable to design a generator and maintain the stability of the power grid.In the paper, we simplify the generator to some extent according to the actual situation and establish the corresponding end's characteristics equations and magnetic-linked equations. Then analysis the voltages and the currents of the stator and rotor under excitation-loss based on the one generator and infinite system. At the same time we give a detailed analysis about the power characteristics of the generator. Here we have two methods to calculate and simulate the characteristics of the generator with loss of excitation. At first, we build the simulation model on the platform of the matlab/simulink with the theory of the synchronous generator and single-generator and infinite system. Then analysis several faults of the missing excitation magnetic and simulate them respectively.Next analysis the fault of the lost excitation which has the lest impact on the generator based on the theory of the Finite Element method(short as FEM) with the software of the ANSYS. Then use the data that comes from the result of the simulation as a plus load constrains to the model to analysis the case of the electromagnetic .the result of the electromagnetic is used as the load of the electromagnetic—temperature coupled field analysis model to analysis the distribution of the temperature in the rotor. According to the result of the electromagnetic and the temperature we get the conclusion about the performance of the asynchronous operation of the generator with loss of excitation.
