With the improvement of the aircraft performance at low altitude and high speed, bird strike has been hidden trouble of safe flight. As one of the pivotal components of the aircraft, the anti-bird impact design of the windshield have been an important part of aircraft design, which must be made great efforts to research in all countries. The anti-bird impact design begins from experiments, but the regular and the full-size test will be time-consuming, laborious and costly. With the developments of the computer and finite element method, the mean combining finite element numerical simulation and experiments has been formed gradually in the anti-bird impact design. In this paper, bird-impact accidents were discussed and the characteristic and research method were summarized. Bird-impact test of a airplane windshield, including the test methods, test devices and the results analysis was also described. On this basis, the digital model of windshield and the virtual test environment system had been established. And the bird-impact load model was studied as well as the basic theories including large deformation, viscous-elastic, collision-contact. The key technologies for the solution of bird-impact in ABAQUS were summed up. Then the simulation was carried out with two kinds of different constitutive equations for the windshield and bird models, respectively. The results had been analyzed and compared with the test results.Finite element simulation can relative be true to simulate bird impact process by comparison with the test results. And the simulation results agree well with the test results. Thus the finite element analysis can provid the valuable datas for anti-bird impact design of the windshield.
