Collaborative design is a research focus and front technology in modern engineering design field and it can build a virtual design environment which has multidisciplinary, cross-domain, cross-region, group, distributed characters. So it has better application prospect in enterprise. The collaborative design system or platform in the past often use distributed component technology or Web Service mechanism, so the integration of resources is limited and real-time is low, particularly because of the limitations of network bandwidth the computation of large scale data is difficult. Grid computing technology is new result of the development of network and computing technologies. It provides a framework of resource aggregation which can solve the problem of aggregation and sharing in dynamic, heterogeneous virtual organization. Based on grid computing technologies, building a stable and efficient collaborative design platform through using distributed and parallel computing is more beneficial to improve collaborative ability and design efficiency of enterprise. With the development of network and multi-core technologies, the application of grid computing technology in collaborative design is becoming important and urgent.Aiming at the problem of limited resource aggregation ability and lacked grid effect in collaborative design, this paper proposes a grid-based collaborative design platform framework, which integrates grid computing technology into collaborative design field, brings grid features of resource aggregation and sharing in dynamic for enterprise collaborative design. The framework provides ideas of constructing the system and methods of implement for latter development and research in collaborative design field.Currently the application of distributed and parallel computing technologies is wide, but the application effect in mechanical design is suboptimal. For applying them flexibly to support efficient collaborative design work, this paper discusses their characteristics and application features, analyses the serial-parallel relationship of execution process of design unit or modules in product design, sums up regulation to apply distributed and parallel computing technologies in collaborative design. It provides a basis for enterprise and developer to build an efficient collaborative design platform, improving product efficiency.Aiming at the problems such as large-scaled data and long computing time in collaborative design of complex product, according to the application regulation, based on the platform framework, this paper develops two specific cases: collaborative automatic design and parallel assembly services, and analyses related realization technologies. These two services use distributed and parallel computing technologies flexibly, improve efficiency of collaborative design and realize digital speedy design of complex product. This paper also researches the load balancing in the process of task distribution and offers corresponding simple algorithm.Finally, the collaborative design prototype system developed and relative development tools are presented. Experimental results of concrete case study obtained from Lenovo DeepComp 1800 System are presented and analysed, it verifies the application efficiency of distributed and parallel computing technology based on the test data and provides further optimization strategy.
