In the super-conductive magnet system, compared with the use of liquid substance, the conduction cooled technology has great advantages to cool the magnet. The current leads which combine the power supply and the super-conductive magnet system are the main thermal leakage source. Taking the technology of HTS current leads can effectively reduce the thermal leakage source.According to the National High-tech Development Program (863), Institute of Cryogenics of HUST begins to study and design cooling system of SMES by cryocooler. Based on this background, the characters of conduction cooled HTSC is discussed in the paper.Firstly the class, structure and property manufacturing methods of HTS, which relating with design of binary current leads, would be introduced. The relationship of the covered silver layers and the HTS current leads are discussed too.Secondly, the conduction model of the binary current leads is built. the copper current leads are fabricated to make sure the heat current crossing the cut-off point is least. The detailed parameter of HTS current leads supplied by the Northwest Institute for Nonferrous Metal Research are introduced, and the relationship of the thermal interface resistance are discussed too.Thirdly, the cryogenic system of High Temperature Superconductive Magnetic Energy storage (SMES) is introduced. It includes the cooling plan of the GM cryocooler the insulation and analysis of the heat leak.Lastly the experiment was done in the cryogenic system. We get a analysis report of the experiment data.In this paper, we design and fabricate the binary current leads which were used in the SMES system and operate well.
