Qinghai-Tibet Railway is the world's highest and longest highland railway, and there were many difficulties we never met before in the construction of this railway. There will be also many problems in the railway operation, in which the braking capacity of the trains is an important issue. The brake equipment of trains is one of the most important parts of the safe operation, which can limit the processing of the realization of the heavy haul railway and high-speed train. Low pressure atmosphere on the plateau would affect the braking system which may change the braking ability of train. So it is necessary to investigate the braking system ability of the brake system in low-pressure atmosphere, and providing the basis and guidance for manipulation of the train at highland.Using the train air brake system simulation software, this is based on air flow theory and vehicle control valve principle. The long trains and short trains are taken as the simulating the characters of the braking system on plains and plateaus with computer, calculating braking characteristics in long and short train in the term of emergency braking, large decompression of the service braking and small decompression of the service braking, something are found that in the emergency braking and service braking with the atmospheric pressure reduced , the brake cylinder balance pressure will be increased in the low-pressure environment, and atmospheric pressure would have large effect on the early inflatable time of braking system. In addition to simulations to characteristics of the air pressure and the early inflatable and release of the air brake system, further simulations under have been done about braking distance all conditions. The relationship of the braking distance and the pressure changes, and the reasons for the changes of brake speed regulation capability has been analyzed, in order to make some proposals on the safe operation of the Qinghai-Tibet railway.
