Light is the basic element of visual art. Because of it, everything in the world can be seen. With the development of people's taste in lighting, the design of lighting art is becoming a fashion in public environmental design. In the recent years, the construction of the city of Xiamen is developing constantly. And lighting, as part of the construction, is of great importance, especially the lighting in the main streets. Otherwise, owing to inexperienced and low design, there are a great number of problems in the lighting project. The essay is devoted to the investigation on the lighting in Japanese airports, hotels, streets and public landscape as well as the analysis of some outstanding works of Ando Tadao. Furthermore, the essay associates it with that in Xiamen, and puts forward some suggestions for improving the public environmental lighting in Xiamen. The suggestions are as follows: 1. Stop the large-scale lighting project and enhance the exquisite design of the key constructions and landscape lighting; 2. Improve the lighting design with the human-oriented concept; 3. Improve the quality of the public environmental lighting design in Xiamen in terms of technique and material. It is hoped that the lighting construction in Xiamen will be promoted.
