| This thesis introduces in detail the method to design a gravity retaining wall and analyzes the optimized elements of the limited backfilling of the retaining wall, considering the practical features of the project. The design of the retaining wall lasted five months from May, 2005 to Oct. 2005 with a few modifications of the design during the time. Also, the design was modified several times according the real condition during the construction, and eventually was completed in June, 2006.The retaining wall which is 5 to 13 meters high is classified as a large gravity containing wall. Full of the center of the habitation are the buildings, either are houses of medium high or underground garages. The bases the buildings are long-diameter, man-made digging piles, which are embedded in the rock of medium efflorescence more than 500mm. The factors mentioned above make the length of backfill behind the containing wall is only 5 to 20 meters, which is a case of limited backfill that is not referred to in the design code.The design code shows the formulas of soil pressure computations which is based on the Coulomb's theory, but not explains how to figure the action spot of the active soil pressure, especially the cohesive soil. The method to design a gravity retaining wall is introduced though the design of the wall in this thesis, and the main contents are as follows.1. According to the practical features of the project all the optimized elements of the limited backfilling were considered. While, the concept of limited backfilling in this thesis has catholicity more than the design code.2. According to the Coulomb's theory, this thesis shows the specific method to calculate the action spot of the active soil pressure on different sorts of soil including cohesive soil, non-cohesive soil, limited backfill and complex surface backfill. The method has an easy theory and can be smoothly accepted by ordinary designers.3. The pressure computation of complex surface backfill and the limited backfill has been realized by VB6.0 programming. Computations of active soil pressure and checking computations of gravity retaining wall of different sorts can be satisfied by the programming provided it is predigested accordingly.The south of Jinan is a mountainous area, which means that the application of gravity retaining wall is very common. The thesis may offer some help to the designs of large retaining walls. |
