Since the great importance of excitation system for voltage stability, more attention has been paid to excitation system modeling in the field of electromechanical transient simulation. The main purpose of the paper is to set up user defined model of excitation system via a new method.Firstly, the paper gives a brief introduction on the function of excitation system, its development and state of arts. Besides, the composition of excitation system, including main excitation system, voltage measurement and loads compensation, protection with the limit, auxiliary adjuster and field regulator, is also illustrated.Secondly, invention and development of user defined model (UDM) are introduced. Then, the principle of UDM and its constitution are elaborated. It's also mentioned disadvantages of the UDM in some domestic and foreign power system simulation softwares: using specialized simulation language actually increases difficulty of usage; the majority of UDM data is exchanged through read-write disk files, which greatly reduces the efficiency of the simulation; last but not the least, the completed models are not sufficiently used when building the new one.Thirdly, improved plug-in module technique (IPMT) is proposed. The paper explains that how to build user defined procedure with IPMT. And the format of the input-file and the key to find out balancing point for balance problem of UDM are also presented. At last, the flow chart of electromechanical transient simulation based on UDM is given. Finally, several sets of examples are used to verify the accuracy and reusability of the UDM with IPMT.
