It is indispensable to do some related study to ensure the safe and reliable application of digital technology in the Instrumentation and Control (I&C) Systems in Nuclear Power Plants. And, because of the flexibilities in digital systems, the I&C Systems could be more intelligent if adding some suitable additional functions to it, so that they can monitor and control the Nuclear Power Plants more safely.After analyzing the architecture of the I&C Systems in Nuclear Power Plants, some characteristics of the digital I&C Systems are concluded, and then, the safety issues which are specific to digital systems, such as software common-mode failure, software quality assurance and so on, are expatiated in this paper.Then, some feasibility study on function expanding of the digital I&C Systems is done from the perspective of diagnosis, because the advanced intelligent systems, which gathers the functions of control, diagnosis, maintenance, technical management and so on, must be the developing direction of this digital systems. After discussing the intelligent diagnosis technology in Nuclear Power Plants, an Intelligent Diagnosis System has been designed according to the structural features of the digital I&C Systems. The way of how to achieve this design is discussed in detail with developing a LOCA Fault Diagnosis System after analyzing the phenomena of the SBLOCA (Small Break Loss of Coolant Accident), and this system is developed by using the Visual Basic6.0 and Access2000 Database. It is a useful attempt to achieve the online diagnosis for the digital Nuclear Power Plant via this work.
